Private sperm storage
The Canberra Fertility Centre runs a sperm banking service. This service
can be used by anyone who has the need to preserve their sperm for future
use. We recommend that men about to undergo oncology treatment or vasectomies
consider the advantages of using this service.
What do I need to do?
We require recent (within 12 months) blood screens for HIV 1/2, Hepatitis
B Surface Antigen and Hepatitis C, so that we can store your sperm. Once
these tests have been performed, you need to make an appointment to produce
a sample. We have a room for this purpose, and we do prefer that you produce
the specimen here, so that we can guarantee that the correct temperature
requirements are met. It is ideal for you to abstain for no more than three
days prior to producing a semen sample to obtain the best result.
What costs are involved?
The service does have a fee associated with it which is not covered by Medicare. This
charge covers the cost of freezing and storing your sperm for up to one (1)
year. Please see the Canberra Fertility Centre fee brochure for
current charges.
Consent forms need to be signed prior to producing the sample. These cover the conditions involved in the storing of the sperm. If you have a partner, we require her to consent to you freezing your sperm. A witness is needed for your signatures, and we prefer that you sign these forms in our presence—this also gives you an opportunity to ask any questions.
How do I organise this?
