Although surrogacy arrangements have legal standing in the ACT, the Commonwealth government which administers the Medicare scheme specifically prohibits the payment of Medicare benefits for IVF services carried out in conjunction with surrogacy. Consequently IVF surrogacy involves considerable out-of-pocket expenses. You must be prepared for costs in the range of $10,000 to $20,000 depending on location.
